ROOKIE FAQ's

Q: What IS rugby?
A: To get a better idea of what the game is all about you should watch any game you can - men or women's, professional or amateur. You can also check out a link on the Quake (our favorite men's team) website at http://www.quakerugby.org/newcomers.htm and click on the "rugby rookie primer".

Check out the Mudhen Rugby Schedule to find out when we will be playing our next game.

Q: What are the Mudhens all about?
A: This question is impossible to answer in one sentence! This quote pretty much sums up how we roll, we are truly a one of a kind team: "In our country, true teams rarely exist . . . social barriers and personal ambitions have reduced athletes to dissolute cliques or individuals thrown together for mutual profit . . . Yet these rugby players with their muddied, cracked bodies, are struggling to hold onto a sense of humanity that we in America have lost and are unlikely to regain. The game may only be to move a ball forward on a dirt field, but the task can be accomplished with an unshackled joy and its memories will be a permanent delight. The women and men who play on that rugby field are more alive than too many of us will ever be. The foolish emptiness we think we perceive in their existence is only our own." - Victor Cahn.

Q: How do I know if I'll like rugby?
A: Honestly, you only know by trying it out. You will either love it from the first second, or you'll decide that it's not quite for you.

Q: When can I join the team? When is the best time to join?
A: New players are welcome at ANY TIME. The start of the season is probably the ideal time for those who have no experience playing rugby. However, no matter when you join we'll be sure to teach you just what it is that you're supposed to be doing! Just come out to practice and we'll take care of the rest!

Q: When/where do you practice?
A: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:45PM to 8:30PM at Marymoor Park in Redmond, WA, Field 7. Check the Mudhen Rugby Schedule for the most up to date practice information.

Q: What kind of equipment do I need?
A: Most importantly a mouth gaurd (top teeth only, so you can still talk) and cleats (molded/studded - soccer cleats are usually fine)! Once you decide that you can't live with out rugby, then you can purchase rugby socks, shorts, and jerseys. In the meantime, all you need is warm and durable clothes to practice in.

Q: Do I need to be in shape?
A: Simply put – YES! There are no "try-outs" or "cuts" on the Mudhens. You are not required to be in shape, but you'll quickly learn that it is important in order to be a good rugger - the games are 80 minutes long with minimal stoppage in play. The ideal would be for you to be in enough shape to jog 2-3 miles every day and lift weights as well. Finding someone to work out with helps considerably!

Q: How much does all of this cost?
A: The team dues are $100 per rugger per season. This money helps to cover field and ref fees, as well as dues that the team has to pay to the USA Rugby Union. There may also be costs associated with optional team trips. We hold fundraising events to help alleviate these costs.

Please don't let cost prohibit you from joining the team. We are always willing to work something out in terms of a payment plan.

Q: What are "rugby socials"?
A: After home games, we host the post-game "drink up." In order to thank the opposing team for playing us we provide them with food and beer, free of charge. The Mudhens, however, are expected to pay for themselves (generally between $5 and $10) and whoever else they bring (feel free to bring your friends!). The other team gets first helpings before we dive in.

Q: Where can I find more information about rugby?
A: If you have other questions about the Emerald City Mudhens please contact our Rookie Coordinator, Ashley.
